Do you know a friend who is struggling? Do you have a friend who is more upset or withdrawn? Are they out of sorts? Are they just not themselves? Trust your gut feeling.

One in seven Australians will experience depression in their lifetime. One in sixteen Australians is currently experiencing depression. In the wake of mental health advocate Danny Frawley’s passing, R U OK? day symbolises more than simply asking friends and family ‘Are you okay?’.

R U OK? is a charity dedicated to mental illness. R U OK? day is about creating meaningful connections with others around them. By simply sparking a conversation with someone who may be struggling with life, you are showing you are them for them. It may allow them to open up and know they are not alone. You don’t have to be an expert or a psychologist, all you need to be is a good friend and a good listener.

If you don’t know how to reach out, follow these simple steps:

  1. Ask
  2. Listen
  3. Encourage action
  4. Check-in

Check-in on a loved one today.
