When Depression Takes Over Your Life

How To Take Control Of Your Mental Health.

A survey of more than 10,000 Australian women shows that 40% have been professionally diagnosed with depression or anxiety. This show just how profound of a problem it is in our country.

Anyone who’s experienced depression knows just how much time this illness consumes. And it’s ok. When depression is at its worst, your only job is to survive.

But when it starts lifting a little, it’s easy to get stuck in inertia — a place where you fail to take risks because sub-consciously you’re afraid to fall down the rabbit hole again. If you find yourself in this situation, here are a few things you can do when you feel taken over by your illness.

  • Accept that the only one who can change your circumstances is you. The universe is not going to help you out here, no matter how much you believe it will. The only way to get what you want is to reach out and take it, even if you have to reach out a million times.
  • Don’t judge/be too hard on yourself. So what if you’ve had to push back your plans for a while? It doesn’t mean you won’t get there eventually.
  • Try not to compare yourself to others because they are unlikely to be in the same situation as you. Comparison and jealousy will only make you feel worse about yourself and be a hindrance to your recovery.
  • Start making a list of what you need to do to get where you want to be. Make sure these things are doable to ensure you’re not faced with grave disappointment. Laying out your small victories in front of you will promote a sense of pride and achievement that will motivate you to keep going.
  • Remember that your depression doesn’t define you. It might seem as if it’s taking over your life right now, but eventually it won’t.
