CrowdInk had the chance to sit down (virtually) with Bev Mackenzie, the founder of Petite Retreat Outdoor Living, an online store designed to connect outdoor enthusiasts living in tight, often urban spaces, with quality furniture that can provide a respite from that “city feel.” She talks about how she started, the role that marketing plays, and her personal favorite items from Petite Retreat.

CrowdInk: Tell us about your brand. How did you get started?

Bev Mackenzie: The idea for Petite Retreat formed during my own search for stylish but compact outdoor furniture. I had just relocated to Sydney from London,  and moved into  an apartment with beautiful harbour views and a  little balcony – that  I planned to turn into a relaxed,  tranquil  little oasis in the city.

What I found really surprised me: most stores catered for the family home, selling big and, somewhat bulky, six piece settings or modular sofas that, couldn’t be bought as individual pieces. Much of what was on offer would overcrowd my space, or force me to use it for only one purpose.

Coming from a Marketing background, I saw the opportunity, and the idea of Petite Retreat was born.  I have assembled a collection of items to provide choice and inspiration for you to create an inviting, tranquil outdoor space where you can entertain;  enjoy a meal;  or simply relax in the fresh air and read the paper – whatever takes your fancy.

The carefully chosen range of furniture and accessories is perfectly suited to smaller outdoor space and is sourced locally and internationally

CI: What is your favourite outdoor piece?

BM: My favourite piece is the Melody Sofa. Its curved lines are really elegant and unusual, and you get the beauty of rattan with the durability of aluminium.

CI: What’s your number 1 tip for anyone starting a new business?

BM: Make sure you allocate time each day to Marketing. Don’t get bogged down in admin!
