What Do Entrepreneurs Have to Fear?

“That thought that one day, I’ll wake up, and no one wants your [product] anymore. That is very scary, and it is an irrational fear, but I believe a lot of entrepreneurs can relate to it.”

Entrepreneurial Fear

Darcy Smyth of The Tonal Persuasion Method For Sales – Darcy J Smyth and AWS Productions put together a phenomenal video detailing something entrepreneurs rarely talk about: Fear.

The video starts with a hook that most new business owners and innovators can relate pretty well to:

“One day, I wonder, will all of this just not be there tomorrow? One day will all of this just fall apart? This great path that I was on, having so much fun, making money from the couch over there. That thought that one day, I’ll wake up, and no one wants your thing anymore. That is very scary, and it is an irrational fear, but I believe a lot of entrepreneurs can relate to it.”

A Few Honest Takeaways from The Video

1. [What scares you?] It was a matter of, again like you’ve said, putting yourself, separating yourself somewhat from what everyone else is doing. Especially now, because you have to get yourself out there using social media. Because that’s where all your friends are, that is where everyone you know is hanging out. And, you know, to actually put yourself up in lights like that, or expose yourself that way.

2. When you take the plunge into starting your own business, and giving it a really good crack, throwing away the rest of whatever you’ve got going on, throwing away the safety blanket, throwing away all that bullshit, it is fucking terrifying. Harness the shit out of that fear, use it, and let it drive you and know that it is normal.

3. You have the choice between failing forward, and remaining in a cushy job that you are bored with for another 50 years. I decided at 24-25 that I did not want that for the next 50 years, so I chose something different. I chose the scary part of it.
