The drive-ins are a classic, fun way of watching films. Who doesn’t love the experience of rolling into the car park surrounded by other cars and tuning on the radio to the sounds of your chosen movie.

This summer Melburnians are in for a treat as a new rooftop-outdoor cinema takes the stage as the newest outdoor cinema experience to hit the block.

Opposite the Melbourne Star in the Docklands, The Backlot Rooftop Drive-in aims to capture the excitement, nostalgia and romance of a traditional drive-in cinema while showcasing a 360- degree view of Melbourne’s glittering city skyline.

The cinema will show new release feature films with two sessions playing throughout the evening at 8:30pm and 10:30pm and the addition of a late night session on a Friday. This means there is a session for everyone so there’s no excuse to miss out!

The cinema will show a variety of genres in addition to premiering new releases, so whether you take your kids, your partner or go for a night out with the girls you’re bound to find something that everyone agrees on.

The complex will feature twin-screens which are state of the art, each with fields designed to comfortably fit 65 vehicles meaning you can take everyone you know for a fun night out.

The radio transmitters have also had an upgrade from the old days with a world-class sound system broadcasting to vehicles using restricted FM transmitters so everyone can hear what’s going on.

But being summer, we all know that sometimes a warm night is not a great time to be sitting in the car, especially if the air-con is off and the hot air is streaming in- not ideal.

Don’t worry, for those that would rather an experience without the car the blue-deck area is perfect for you. Think relaxing alfresco under the stars watching your favourite movie. Yep, they’ve thought of everything, even offering the classic movie snacks like popcorn and choc-tops to complete your movie experience.

When does it open I hear you ask?

The cinema goes live on Boxing Day this year (December 26th) with sessions tipped to be a total sell-out.

A list of films is yet to be announced so keep an eye on the website to see what movies are coming soon and get ready to book tickets to this one of a kind Melbourne experience.

After all, what’s more Melbourne than a drive-in cinema on a rooftop?
