Why Having Coffee with your Brekkie isn't such a Great Idea

A zombie, groaning and stumbling towards the kitchen, reaches out for brains – no – the kettle switch. That’s you. You’re the zombie.

It’s the reason everyone secretly hates that person with the ‘don’t talk to me before I’ve had my coffee’ attitude, and though they say it jokingly, we all know they’re not really joking. It’s an established ideal in our society. It’s the reason Melbourne has the best coffee in the world (also not joking).

However – our bodies have their very own system going, and coffee, especially first thing in the morning, is not that great for you.

According to my research, cortisol, our pesky stress hormone, is also what increases alertness. And although your groggy self may prove otherwise, cortisol peaks in the first hour of being awake. We therefore aren’t getting the benefits of the caffeine we’re consuming, and could instead stress our adrenal glands as a result.

Plus, if you’re a breakfast lover like I am, you might also want to ditch coffee due to the effect it has on our absorption of vitamins and minerals.

Now, you might be thinking nothing can replace the mildly painful sensation of a scalding drink to your lips, and don’t worry, I’ve got you covered.

My suggestion: A turmeric latte. All you need is some turmeric powder, hot milk (dairy-free works too) and a pinch of cinnamon. Besides being delicious, turmeric also has a large amount of health benefits. Enjoy!
