CrowdInk had the chance to sit down (virtually) with Sarah Kelk, the mind behind Hello Polly, an online store thoughtfully curated to bring you unique and inspirational artwork and design. She talks about the importance of original art, the concept behind Hello Polly, and shares her insights for aspiring entrepreneurs.
CrowdInk: What was the inspiration behind Hello Polly?
Sarah Kelk: We started Hello Polly back in 2011, adding our own range of homewares to the mix in 2014, although our inspiration has remained the same the whole time!
We are passionate about showcasing work from artists and designers and thrive on being able to provide a platform for their work to be seen. We are constantly inspired by what the designers and artists create, and in turn, this rubs off on us when we design our own range.
The aim is to operate as an online retail environment, studio, and gallery, combining elements of art, design, and popular culture to create a unique shopping experience whilst keeping quality design accessible and affordable. All the work is hand-chosen by the Hello Polly team because we love it and know our customers will too.
CI: What makes Hello Polly different from other similar brands?
SK: We have a pretty unique edit of products, all from small independent artists, designers and brands that are hard to come by. Most of the products we carry are handmade and very limited.
Our own products have seamlessly fit in with the existing products from other designers and we love that we also wholesale our own Hello Polly Home collection out to other like-minded businesses.
CI: What are 3 of the most loved/popular pieces that everyone should have?
SK: An original piece of artwork. A timeless throw. Some handmade ceramics.
CI: What is your favourite artwork at the moment?
SK: We love our One Day print. It was one of our first prints to be released in our own Hello Polly Home range, and its still one of our favourites. Plus we only have a few prints in the edition left.
CI: What are some of the hottest trends this season? Artwork, accessories, giftware….etc
SK: We can never go past artwork, whether it’s originals or limited edition prints. We find it’s one of the best ways to update any space, and an easy way to add colour to a room.
CI: What is your number 1 tip for aspiring entrepreneurs looking to start their own business?
SK: Start with putting together a strong business plan. Make sure you chat to lots of people about your ideas as you go and in the end, don’t forget to trust your gut instincts.
