Sydney and Melbourne are often at ends competing for the title best Australian city. However, Canberra has swept in while they were sleeping and claimed the prize after being named best Australian city in Lonely Planet’s Best Places to Travel 2018. The city was only beaten by Seville, Spain and Detroit, USA.

Canberra came in third; taking the highest-ranking position any Australian city has been placed in the awards. Visit Canberra responded to the matter, “and it’s easy to see why.”

It’s a place of federal governance but it fosters much more than passing bills and debating politics. Canberra is a city full of culture and vibrancy, from the National War Museum, to new up and coming restaurants and bars. The Lonely Plant praised Canberra for it’s “modernist architecture and tree-lined avenues”, saying it’s the perfect place to find “fresh ground coffee, before spotting Kangaroos in the capital’s reserves”.

Canberra has well and truly cemented itself as a great place to travel on the world stage.
