Well congratulations everybody, we’ve done it. After a crazy year we’ve finally reached December, the month of winding down and putting our feet up as we listen to Mariah Carey’s ‘All I Want For Christmas’ playing over and over through the radio stations.
Although houses in the streets are twinkling with Christmas lights and stores are exploding with Christmas spirit, the festive season wouldn’t be complete without watching some of our favourite holiday movies.
It’s the one time of the year we can take a look back at the old Christmas classics and mix those with some of our recent holiday favourites to create the perfect viewing playlist in the days leading up to Santa’s arrival.

The Santa Clause (1994)

This film follows Scott Calvin (Tim Allen) who is too straight and narrow to believe in Christmas, that is before he startles Santa on his roof causing him to fall and disappear. Left with the jolly mans suit and his sleigh, reindeer and gifts Scott tries on the suit and finishes delivering all the gifts in an effort to make his son happy. Little does he know that by doing so he has inadvertently accepted the job of Santa Claus and his faced with unusual weight gain, growing a beard and turning into Mr. Claus himself.

Why you should watch it?
Interactions with fiery elves are hilarious, especially head elf Bernard.

Home Alone (1990)

When 10-year-old Kevin (Macaulay Culkin) finds himself mistakenly left behind as his family goes on a Christmas vacation, he takes it upon himself to protect his house from the local Wet Bandits, who plan on robbing his supposed-to-be-empty house later that evening. Using all sorts of booby traps, the bandits find they may have estimated the 10 year old, as he’s a lot smarter than he seems.

Why should you watch it?
Slapstick makeshift security is by far the best security system we’ve ever seen, and the most entertaining to watch.

Love Actually (2003)

A Christmas classic nowadays, you can’t think about Christmas movie without thinking of this Richard Curtis beauty. Set in London, the film follows the love lives of eight different but interrelated couples, bringing about a mix of emotions and storylines. We follow the tales through the month leading up to Christmas and see the festive season from different perspectives.

Why should you watch it?
The perfect mix of romantic, sappy and Christmassy to create the ultimate festive rom-com.

Jingle All The Way (1996)

Howard (Arnold Schwarzenegger) gets a taste of the Christmas shopping mayhem when he dedicates his time to finding and buying the sold out Turbo-Man toy for his son. Worried about disappointing his buy, we see him go to great lengths to get his hands on the action figure. Follow his eventful journey in a time where action figures and dolls were all the rage and kids weren’t just about the newest electronic update.

Why should you watch it?
Schwarzenegger is the epitome of Christmas time shopping, watch as he slowly loses his mind over a Turbo-Man.

The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993)

In this Tim Burton Christmas/Halloween hybrid, the twig like protagonist, Pumpkin King of Halloween Town Jack Skellington, opens the portal to Christmas Town. Awed by the lights, snow and ‘Sandy Claws’ he decides to create his own Christmas back home but is yet to learn the true meaning of Christmas.

Why should you watch it?
Stop-motion and animated. Fan favourite even after more than 20 years. Oh, and it has a killer soundtrack.

How the Grinch Stole Christmas (2000)

The small hearted Grinch (Jim Carrey) takes the place of the scrooge in this Dr. Seuss kids classic. Transforming himself into the green revenge-seeking Grinch, Carrey encapsulates the character in a funny and entertaining way. Living on the outskirts of Whoville, the Grinch sits plotting how he will ruin Christmas for the citizens of the town below and stop Christmas in its tracks.

Witty one-liners are standard throughout the film and sure to catch you off guard.
