Against all odds, the AFL have managed to navigate and complete an 18-match season, which took the organisation, clubs, players and fans on a roller-coaster journey.
The Premiership season began on 19 March and took a two-month break due to COVID-19 and resumed on 11 June. On resumption, the normally 20-minute quarters were reduced to 16-minutes, plus time-on.
The home state of AFL; Victoria hosted the first five rounds without crowds which quickly came to an end as the state headed back into lockdown, to which the AFL told all 18-clubs to pack their bags and head interstate to settle into hub life for the duration of the season.
It was a year of many firsts for the AFL, one of which included the changed location of the Grand Final stadium, from the MCG in Melbourne to the Gabba in Queensland. It will be the first time in AFL history, that the Grand Final won’t be held in Melbourne.
Nevertheless, we made it and in the words of AFL CEO Gillon McLachlan, “Footy will find a way…we always do”.
