In a significant development, two individuals, both foreign residents, have been apprehended and charged in connection with a series of over 60 burglaries targeting homes in the south-east region of Melbourne. The accused, two Lithuanian men aged 50 and 37, stand accused of pilfering property exceeding $2 million in value during their crime spree, which reportedly took place between May 2022 and July 2023.

Law enforcement agencies made a significant breakthrough in the case when they discovered a sizable cache of stolen items, weighing over 80kg, including substantial amounts of cash, jewellery, designer bags, and clothing. This discovery was made at a Melbourne dock on Friday, just hours before the goods were slated to be transported out of the country. The stolen items were found inside a shipping container.

Detectives believe that the accused duo specifically targeted residences in prominent areas such as Balwyn, Kew, Moorabbin, South Yarra, Sandringham, and Toorak. Their arrest occurred on Wednesday, July 12, following an alleged burglary at a residence in Sandringham. During this incident, a safe, cash, jewellery, and handbags were reported stolen.

The Victoria Police, in collaboration with the Australian Federal Police and international law enforcement agencies, have been diligently investigating the activities of these individuals for the past 12 months. The arrests signify the authorities’ unwavering commitment to combatting organised crime networks operating within the region.

Both suspects have been charged with burglary and theft offences and are currently in custody, awaiting their appearance at Moorabbin Magistrates Court on a later date.

Detective Acting Inspector Luke Holmes emphasised the significance of these arrests in sending a clear message to criminals. He stated, “We will find you and you will be held to account, no matter where you’re from.” The authorities remain determined to bring those involved in organised crime to justice and ensure the safety and security of the community.
