A cinema in Austin, Texas recently announced they would be holding a “women only” screening of the new Wonder Woman movie.

In a statement regarding the screening, the Alamo Drafthouse Ritz said, “Apologies, gentlemen, but we’re embracing our girl power and saying ‘No Guys Allowed’ for one special night at the Alamo Ritz,

“And when we say ‘Women (and People Who Identify As Women) Only,’ we mean it”, they continued. “Everyone working at this screening — venue staff, projectionist, and culinary team — will be female”.

And although the session quickly sold out, causing the movie theatre to schedule a second screening, men took to Twitter in an outrage, calling the theatre’s decision ‘sexist’.

One Twitter user, named Ryan, said, “I hope someone sues this is discrimination based on sex”, with two others tweeting “If you had a guys only screening of Thor 3 there’d be an uproar and you know it” and “Sexist bigots” respectively.

But fortunately, this has not deterred the cinema from going forward with their female empowerment event as, in response to a forth man’s Facebook question of if there would be an “male only viewing”, they said, “go for it” and included a link to their events page.

Similarly, another man “threatened” to come dressed as woman to get into the women only screening, to which they also replied with “Thanks for the money!”

And in light of some men calling the cinema sexist for the decision, Alamo Drafthouse’s creative director Morgan Hendrix, released a statement, saying, “That providing an experience where women truly reign supreme has incurred the wrath of trolls only serves to deepen our belief that we’re doing something right,

“As a result, we will be expanding this program across the country and inviting women everywhere to join us as we celebrate this iconic superheroine in our theaters”.

Clearly, the staff at the Alamo Ritz aren’t scared by a bit of name calling.
