For centuries men have known that strong facial hair can be a defining feature and can portray characteristics such as power, strength, prestige and wealth. So it’s natural for men to want a full, lush beard, sideburns or moustache.
Fortunately, recent advances in technology means men with sparse or patchy facial hair can now have the beard they have always dreamed of.
There are many reasons for men requiring facial hair transplants, some smooth-faced young men ask for bushy beards, others are looking for a chic square of hair under the lower lip, known as a soul patch and some patients seek to fill in bald patches caused by injury, burns, due to their genetic defects such as cleft palate and trauma to the face that has resulted in scarring or deformity.
What is a facial hair transplant?
Facial hair transplantation is a surgical procedure that restores hair to areas of the face where hair is thin or missing. The procedure can focus on one or more of these facial hair areas: the beard, goatee, moustache, sideburns, cheeks and eyebrows.
Even though beard, moustache and sideburn transplants can be pursued to create a more “masculine” look, the biggest demand comes from patients wanting to repair irregularities in beards due to burns, genetic defects or accidental scars. It can also assist with concealing acne scars.
Dr Paraskevas, Cosmetic Surgeon from the Paras Clinic has completed a number of beard transplants in Australia and says demand is growing for this unique procedure.
Dr Paraskevas employs the Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) method for facial hair transplants. Dr Paraskevas explains, “Donor hairs are harvested from the back and or sides of the scalp, (the donor area). Grafts/follicles of hairs are extracted from the back of the scalp and are implanted into the area of the face needing to be filled in”. Post procedure the transplanted hair will break off, around the six-week mark. The hair will start to grow approximately three months after the procedure and will continue to do so up to eighteen months. The hair is ‘permanent’ and can be groomed as per normal.
FUE transplants are a minimally invasive, outpatient procedure that is virtually painless and leaves no linear scar.
Dr. Paraskevas is a renowned hair transplant surgeon with over 15 years of experience in medicine, with more than 10 years of experience in the field of hair restoration surgery, specialising in Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE). His expertise and artistry in all types of facial hair transplantation—including beard, moustache, sideburn, and eyebrow transplants—is ground-breaking using no scalpels, no linear scarring, and little to no post-operative pain.
