Alexandra Billings: Loud, Proud and all About Speaking out

Through a modern take on activism, Alexandra Billings established Modern Gloss Studio, where she and her team help feminists, world-changing authors, activists, and womxn (no not a typo, just being on-brand) who aren’t afraid to speak up and brand themselves so that they can amplify their platform.

CrowdInk had the honour of chatting with Alexandra, discussing all things feminism, activism and empowerment.

What’s the Inspiration Behind Your Business?

When I first started my business, it wasn’t as a designer. It was as a virtual assistant out of complete desperation. My husband had totaled his car mere hours before the doctor induced me to go into labor with our daughter, Diana. (She is now 5, almost 6!) So while it was one of the most stressful situations of my life to give birth with my husband on a gurney next to me and a tube in his chest so he could breathe, it catapulted me into the necessity of starting my own business. It was something I’d wanted to do for YEARS anyway, so this pushed me into making quick decisions. After 5 years of ups and downs and learning about “ideal clients” and invoicing and hiring and firing, I settled into a design studio last year and began offering high-end luxury branding for womxn not afraid to speak up and shatter the status quo.

What is the Problem You’re Trying to Solve? Or USP?

I want loud womxn who are actively involved in the community to have a brand that helps build their authority on days when they need to be involved in their cause. That might be raising little ones, picketing for a basic human right, or hosting coaching calls all day to encourage the ripple effect of activists all over the world. Whatever their cause is – they deserve a brand that backs them up visually.

Who is Your Ideal Customer?

She is loud. She is proud. She is bold and unafraid to say “hey, that’s unfair” or raise a fuss over inequality. She looks forward to the future but is also very present, tuned in to her body, and is on a journey to understanding her own human design.

Have you Been Impacted by Covid, if so how have you Pivoted Your Business?

Honestly, my business has done better than ever since Covid began. Womxn all over the world suddenly needed a brand to match their new online business or amplify their message.

What are Your Goals for 2022 and Beyond?

In 2022, we want to help a client build a platform that allows womxn all over the world to tune into new causes. We’re all about impact and making lots of money doing it, and that’s what we intend to continue doing.

What Advice do you Have for Other Aspiring Female Entrepreneurs?

Throw out the script. Trash the shoulds and get rid of the how-to’s – every business is different. Don’t be afraid to take it slow, and be afraid to say no more than yes. Remember that your own personal boundaries will reflect in your business and if you don’t have any, your business will run you over. You can do this. You were made for this.
