Portugal Wins Eurovision and a Streaker Stormed the Stage

Portugal has won its first ever Eurovision song contest with Salvador Sobral’s sombre and minimalist performance of “Amar Pelos Dois” (For the Both of Us), written by his sister, and singer in her own right, Luisa Sobral.

On his win, Portuguese President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa said, “When we are very good, we’re the best of the best. Congratulations Salvador Sobral”, a sentiment that was continued by Portugal’s Prime Minister Antonio Costa, who said, “A page of history has been written in Portuguese this evening at Eurovision. Bravo Salvador! Bravo Portugal”.

This win also seems to be more meaningful to the 27-year-old singer given that he has a heart condition and is still waiting for a transplant.

Fortunately, he does not let his health condition get in the way, saying, “the disease is a small problem, really, certainly the only one I have in my life”.

He also continued to say that his win was a “victory for music” and that “This is a vote for people who actually mean something with their music,

“Music is not fireworks, music is feeling. So let’s try to do this and bring music back”, he added.

In other Eurovision news, during the annual song contest, which is held in the country that won the previous year, Ukrainian prankster, Vitalii Sediuk, took to the stage during Jamala’s performance, who one last year with her song “1944”, and mooned the audience while wearing an Australian flag like a cape.

Sediuk, who was initially thought to be an Australian streaker given the Aussie flag on his back, but was later revealed to be from the Ukraine and known for his pranks where he accosts celebrities on red carpets.

Australian entry, 17-year-old Isaiah Firebrace, came in ninth place at the annual song contest with his song “Don’t Come Easy” and said on participating in the song contest, “You have to make the most of every opportunity no matter how big the stage is,

“It’s such an amazing opportunity and I know we both feel very honoured to be representing Denmark and Australia”.
