A relationship between two people is unique in itself. Therefore, it is different from every other relationship. Speaking from a personal experience, being in a long distance relationship is extremely challenging, yet it surprisingly brings you both closer together. Here are five suggestions on how to handle being in a long distance relationship, and how to keep the strong bond in place.

  1. Communicate at Least Once a Day

This is a must do for anyone who has been or currently is in a long distance relationship. Communication is what makes the world go around, so it’s only a natural requirement for any type of relationship. Make sure you are both aware of the different time zones and figure out the time that works best to Skype, Facebook message, Facetime, or talk on the phone. Even if you only have time for a quick five minute chat on Facebook Messenger, it will make a huge difference to going about the rest of your day.

  1. Upload/Share Funny Quotes, Images, or Thoughts

This may seem really corny, but when you guys are what seem like two different worlds away, it makes all the difference. This is best done using social media, especially through Facebook, as you are always bound to find something that reminds you of each other and the relationship you both have.

  1. Send Each Other Presents

If your budget allows for it, be sentimental and organise for a bouquet of flowers to be sent to your partners’ house, mail them a handwritten letter reminding them that they are always in your thoughts, or send them a care package with all of their favourite things. You’ll be sure to put a smile on their face.

  1. Give Compliments

This is as simple as saying ‘I love you’ or ‘you look beautiful today’. General compliments are what most people in everyday relationships take for granted, but this is what helps to keep a long distance relationship moving forward as well as maintaining a healthy and strong bond.

  1. Skype/Facetime at Least Once a Week

The idea of having a program or an app that allows talking and seeing the other person’s face is crucial for any modern day long distance relationship. Allowing yourself to spend hours on Skype or Facetime is certainly not a bad thing as face-to-face communication is what most people in relationships take for granted.
