Harvey dropped 50 inches of rain on Tuesday morning. This resulted in nearly 30,000 displaced people in need of safety, shelter and food. Here are some of our favourite support strategies that people have used to help each other:
- Make Human Chains
Annie Smith and her husband called 911 and the Texas National Guard’s emergency number for 4 hours and got no reply. Smith called a colleague. The colleague’s father had alerted the fire department’s rescue team. “I just kind of held onto them, one person at a time and crawled along their arms until the firemen helped me up the ladder onto the truck.” Smith said to ABC. Similarly, a female in labour and an elderly man stuck in a car escaped the floods through the formation of human chains.
- Bake
Bakers stranded at a bakery produced hundreds of loaves of pan dulce bread to feed hungry flood victims. Similarly, Matthew Otero used a generator to keep his donut shop open. His family supported his actions and served donuts and coffee to victims of the neighbourhood.
- Rescue Mass Shapes in Water
Beaumont police officers spotted a female and her baby floating in the canal. The mother saved the child’s life. “When the baby was found the baby was clinging to her. The mother did the best she could to keep her child up over the water.” Officer Carol Riley said. As of yet, the mother has died but the child’s condition had stabilised.
Similarly, the Cajun Navy discovered an elderly female floating head first in the water. They jumped in and revived her. Her life was saved and she has been able to reunite with her family.
- Animal Shelters
A pig, dog and hawk are all example of animals that have been saved! To steer the situation from the mistakes made during Hurricane Katrina 2012, animal rights advocates have cleared shelters in the Houston area and beyond for animals displaced by Hurricane Harvey. Similarly animals in animal shelter have been sent across the country to make room for displaced animals coming in.
- Open Shelters
Jim McIngvale of the Gallery Furniture based in Houston gathered his delivery trucks to rescue people. As of Tuesday children, adults and pets are living in his store.
