When you think of Australia’s bar scene, images of Sydney’s hottest spots and Melbourne’s coolest alleyways probably spring to mind. But it looks like there’s a new best bar in town, as named by Australia’s food and wine authority, Gourmet Traveller. Taking everyone by surprise, the honour went to Bar Rochford, a wine bar in Canberra.
More famous for its politicians than its parties, Canberra’s food and wine scene has been on the rise in recent years. Boasting some of the country’s best-hidden bars and restaurants, it looks like the secret is out and Canberra’s favourite watering holes won’t remain quiet for too much longer.
Bar Rochford, located in the city centre, is primarily known as a wine and cocktail bar, though they do offer a pretty impressive dinner menu if you get peckish. They focus on highlighting local produce and vintages, drawing on the rich Canberra wine region for inspiration.
It might be a bit off the beaten track, but Bar Rochford is scoring the top spot on our list of must-visit bars. Who knew Canberra would ever be cool?
