Dami Im, the winner of X-Factor in 2013, told the Eurovision host she moved to Australia from South Korea when she was nine years old and learned English by listening to the Spice Girls. Last night, she produced Australia’s best-ever result at Eurovision Song Contest.
That was the most inescapable feeling for many Aussies watching yesterday’s 2016 Eurovision Song Contest. Our very own Dami Im was in the clear lead all along. However, it was suddenly overtaken by Ukraine in the final seconds.
Australia’s Dami Im has come second in the song contest keeping with her performance from the past fortnight, Im’s final notes, shocked the audience and were followed up with a huge cheer. It was a beautiful rendition of her song, Sound of Silence.
“Wow Dami, you have done yourself and Australia proud. You’re amazing,” one twitter user tweeted.
Ukraine won the contest with 534 points. Australia followed with 511 points. At the last second, victory was snatched from Australia’s hands, by an equally deserving Ukraine.
Im wore a stunning, glitter-all-over, sparkling white dress for the final. Before the scores were announced, she told the hosts if she won, she would celebrate the victory by having a lemonade with her crew.
Australians, including Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull and Opposition Leader Bill Shorten, were quick to congratulate her.
“You’ve done Australia proud Dami Im,” Mr. Shorten wrote on Twitter.
Congratulations, Dami Im!
