Sopurrfect is Your Number One Resource for Cat Wellbeing

CrowdInk had the chance to sit down (virtually) with Kristian Taylor, founder of Sopurrfect, an online resource for cat lovers and improving cat/human relationships. He talks at length about his initial inspiration for the business, the number one thing you can do to improve your own cat’s wellbeing, and the importance of understanding your pets.

CrowdInk: Tell us about your brand. How did you get started? What was the inspiration behind it?

Kristian Taylor: I have always been interested in animals and pets, particularly their welfare and wellbeing. My family had a farm with a lot of acreage. We had cows, sheep, goats, dogs, and above all else, cats. This turned my interest in animals into a love and passion for seeing them healthy, happy, and active. After school, I would train my family’s working dogs to respond to verbal and nonverbal commands and before long I was doing that for the neighbours and other locals.

After college, I travelled and found that animals in different countries would come up to me, follow me, and get to know me on my travels. I always had a dog or cat following me in whichever city I visited. When I started travelling with my wife, we started carrying treats with us and she would joke that I should quit my job in the technology industry and start an animal training and meet-up service since I did it so often for our friends and family members.

SoPurrfect.com was launched in 2015 as a way for cat owners, cat lovers, and those interested in cat welfare to come together, collaborate on ideas, share information and above all else get their problems solved. It’s also a place for cat owners to truly understand their cats. So often, I hear people talk about cats in less than flattering ways because they just don’t understand their cat or what their cat is trying to tell them. Once I’m able to explain it to them, their relationship with their cat changes. Overnight. For me, this is what inspires me to keep blogging and advocating for cat/human relationships. Obviously, my own experiences as a cat owner to two naughty torties (Shadow and Frosty) as well as my experience to countless foster kittens inspires me every day to make SoPurrfect.com the best website for cat information on the web.

CI: What’s your number one tip for cat welfare?

KT: If I have to choose just one it would be to keep your cat active. Play with them, change up their toys, and interact with them as much as possible. It doesn’t have to be expensive as cats love to play with paper, empty toilet rolls, and other (harmless) household objects. Split their toys into two boxes and change them up every few months. Keeping them active keeps them healthy. It keeps their weight down, but also prevents them ruining furniture. If they have plenty of scratching posts around the house they won’t need to scratch on your furniture. There have also been studies that show interaction between cats and humans is not only good for your mental health, but theirs too so they will live longer!

CI: How do you spend your spare time? Hobbies? Interest?

KT: In my spare time, I like to stay active by cycling and hiking. It gives me an opportunity to see nature in a bigger picture. I also volunteer with the RSPCA in different capacities and am regularly at their shelter playing with animals, cleaning cages and training dogs in preparation for their adoption to their forever homes. I love photography which works really well with having new foster kittens every 6-8 weeks because I have a never ending run of willing subjects to photograph.

My name is Kristian and I am a passionate cat lover and the founder of SoPurrfect. I originally came from the country and grew up on a farm and was able to spend a lot of time with animals. Spending everyday around animals gave me a deep respect, love and passion for all animals, but each time I’ve travelled I seem to be a magnet for cats and dogs with people telling me I have a unique connection with them. It’s not unusual for me to spend holidays sitting by the side of the road petting a new furry friend, or buying extra food to feed stray animals.
