Never Late to Change Career

Despite what your parents, high school teachers or peers may have told you, your career choice is never set in stone.

You’re told to make a decision in your teenage years, but, once you do, there’s no official listening in, writing it all down and sealing it with a non-negotiable stamp. In fact, even if you’ve committed to a job for the past decade, you still have the freedom to just change your mind.

You may be a young retail worker in your 20s looking for a way to upskill into a more managerial position, a 30-something who wants to find a way to progress in career, or just someone who’s decided that the job they have isn’t for them. Whatever your story, it doesn’t matter.

If you’re suddenly at a crossroads in your life and considering leaving that stable income, then pause for a second, take a step back, and keep these point in mind. And once you’re ready, National Training can help you on your way to the career shift, without going out of pocket.

Don’t quit your job

First thing’s first, don’t make any rash decisions. After an epiphany, it may feel like the best option is to drop your current life to completely start afresh. While spontaneity can do great things at times, this isn’t one of them.

The great thing about National Training is you study completely online and at your own pace, so you don’t need to cut ties to keep up with it. You can keep working at your current job while you slowly progress into a new career. Plus, you may be able to find a way into that dream job through your current job.

Make a realistic plan

Once you’ve passed the epiphany point, you can start setting realistic goals and deadlines. Try thinking of the smaller picture, too. One goal could be to scope out the career you’re looking into, find someone you know in the industry and network with them, see what they do.

If you set realistic goals every couple of months, your dream of a new career will start to become a reality. Remember, changing careers does take time, so it won’t all come at once. The best thing to do is understand it’s a slow process, and not let unrealistic ambitions consume your everyday living.

Search all avenues/ pathways

Do your research. Once you know the industry you want to take over, see what ways you can get into it. The good thing about changing careers in the 21st century is that it doesn’t necessarily require another 5 years of tertiary education. There are a number of alternative pathways, depending on what you want to do.

National Training is invested in catering for the person looking for a career shift. With online training, no set deadlines, affordable prices and 12 months to reach qualifications, you don’t have to start at page 1 again.
