Why Limerick Should Be On Every Melbournian’s Travel List

It’s basically the Irish version of Melbourne.

If you’ve been to Ireland, chances are you would have already visited Dublin and/or Galway, the two most popular (and populous) cities in the country. But, if you can’t get enough of the Irish experience and want to try somewhere new, look no further than Limerick. Here are 3 things all Melbournians must do whilst in Limerick.

Visit a rugby match

Like Melbourne, which is commonly referred to as Australia’s sporting capital, Limerick is the only Irish city to have received the award for ‘European City of Sport’. It’s home to one of the most famous rugby teams in the world, Munster Rugby. Buy a ticket to watch them play in their home stadium, Thormond Park, which has a reputation for having one of the most electric sporting atmospheres in the world. If you can’t get enough of the team, take a stadium tour to visit the dressing rooms, walk down the tunnel and experience life as a player.

Try a new café/pub every day (or meal…)

The Irish take their food and drink very seriously. There are restaurants that serve all varieties of cuisines and cater to all kinds of budgets. For cheap food that doesn’t skimp on quality, visit Chez le Fab, a new café and wine bar near Arthurs Quay shopping centre. This place serves up an all-day breakfast menu and hosts regular open mic nights. If you’re willing to fork out a bit more money, visit Freddy’s Bistro. It’s constantly occupied by locals and tourists alike, that generously praise the restaurant for its reasonably priced menu and impeccable service.

Visit the Limerick City Gallery of Art

For an enriching cultural experience, look no further than the Limerick City Gallery of Art. It’s one of the most well known galleries in Ireland, hosting a wide array of international and Irish works, in a building that boasts magnificent Georgian architecture. And the best part is – it’s free! After you tire from all the walking you’re sure to accomplish, visit the on-site café. Visitors are continuously raving about the coffee served up at this joint. Before you visit, be sure to check out the gallery’s website as exhibitions tend to rotate frequently.
