Australians have a tendency of stealing things that were originally from New Zealand and claiming it as our own.

We’ve stolen Crowded House… and Pavlova. Not to mention Phar Lap.

And now it’s come time for us to steal another talent: Lorde.

Lorde is the stage name of Ella Yelich-O’Connor. She first broke onto our radar in 2013 with her song Royals which was an instant number 1 hit.

The immensely cool 16 year-old became known for her sleek, soulful voice with strong emotion. She also simultaneously has a unique sound with distorted vocals, synths and adventurous production.

Now Lorde has come back into our lives, after a mostly silent 2015 and 2016.

If you’re worried that her follow up could never reach the heights of Pure Heroine- don’t be. Lorde has so much raw talent, which only seems to be fuelled by her break.

The singles released so far, ‘Green light’ and ‘Liability’ are the best song writing she’s done. Each lyric is thoughtful and vivid and shows a lot of growth since her debut LP.

So far, her new album has been kept under wraps, but recently she revealed the title ‘Melodrama’ and it is set to be released on 16 June.

I have no doubt it will be strong and incredible album. So let me look into my crystal ball and tell you, 2017 is set to be the year of Lorde.

And the year we claim another New Zealand icon as our own.
