The crowds were alive, the drinks were flowing and music pumping in Day 9 of the Australian Open, with Ball Park Music and Bec Sandridge killing the AO stage, providing the crowd with some quality tunes to soak up the atmosphere. Of course, despite all the options available for patrons to occupy their time, the thrill of international powerhouse tennis players visiting our shores and slamming the hard courts is the real reason we are obsessed with the Australian Open.

Current world #2 and legend of the Australian Open Rafael Nadal dominated his match against unseeded US player Frances Tiafoe, ending the match at 6-3 6-4 6-2. Short rallies and quick, consecutive aces kept Tiafoe at bay, until the second set provided some hope for the 21-year old, with two break points gained through intense rallies. But the hope was fleeting, as the domineering Nadal powered through to victory in one hour and 47 minutes.

Despite the harsh reality of Nadal’s strength against our local tennis heroes, having knocked out three Australian’s in previous rounds, his streak against the US is far greater. His victory over Tiafoe scores him the 21st win against US players in Grand Slams, stretching back to his last defeat by America’s James Blake in the 2005 US Open third round.

Nadal’s win places him into the semifinals, further than his previous efforts in 2018 Aus Open, where he was forced to retire. His eyes are set on 20-year old Greek wonder Stefanos Tsitsipas, whose surprise victory against Federer gained him a reputation as the youngster to beat in the competition.
