Tea is underrated, mostly due to its coffee counterpart. Just because you can’t draw froth pictures or mix it with caramel topping, it doesn’t mean tea shouldn’t have a place in the spotlight.
In fact, what makes tea better than coffee is the many health benefits it possesses. Unlike the coffee debate, tea is actually quite good not just for the soul but for our insides too. But with such a huge variety to choose from, it’s difficult to tell what tea you should be drinking. It’s time for you to sit down and take a read – you’ll need a cuppa for this one.
Black Tea
One of the most well-known teas, Black tea has the most flavour as it’s oxidised a lot longer than green and oolong teas. Because of this, it has a stronger scent and taste. Other black teas include English Breakfast, Earl Grey and Masala Chai tea.
- Health Benefits: Black tea has antioxidant properties that help decrease the risk of chronic disease. It’s also known to lower cholesterol and reduce blood pressure.
Green Tea
Green tea is traditionally from China, and has a slightly sour taste compared to black tea. Other teas that fall in the green tea range include Matcha and Sencha, both from Japan.
- Health Benefits: Green tea is known to boost metabolism and increase fat burning. It may also lower cholesterol and prevent cardiovascular disease.
While Green tea does come with many health benefits, it’s important to know when not to consume green tea. The tea itself has a compound that extracts iron from other iron-heavy foods, so avoid consuming the two together as this can decrease the effectiveness of the tea.
Oolong Tea
This tea is made up of the same plant as both black and green tea, however, falls in the semi-oxidised family.
Health Benefits: Oolong tea hasn’t been as researched as other teas, however, it’s believed that it can boost your metabolism while lowering the risk of type 2 diabetes.
Pu’erh Tea
Pu’erh is an aged tea from China that has a very mature flavour.
- Health Benefits: Pu’erh helps with blood cleansing and digestion. It also promotes overall health due to its presence of antioxidants and anti-inflammatory properties.
Herbal Tea
Unlike the other teas listed, herbal teas are made out of spices, herbs and other plants. Herbal teas include Chamomile, Chrysanthemum and Hibiscus Tea.
- Health Benefits: The antioxidants and vitamins in herbal teas are great for fighting off infections. Immune-boosting teas include elderberry, ginger and echinacea.
While the list of teas goes on, it is evident that there is almost a tea for every kind of situation – definitely something that coffee doesn’t have.
