6 Ways to Rock Your Resume

Is your resume a bit drab? Whatever industry you’re in, a killer resume is the only way to stand out. There are dozens of “how-tos” out there, but we think  ours is pretty special, if we do say so ourselves.

Here are the 6 simplest ways to rock that resume and land that job:

  1. Short and Sweet

Even as a young twenty-something, we have all racked up quite a few internships and jobs over the years. Impressive. That being said, the CEO at Gucci probably doesn’t care that you worked at Mr. Frosty’s the summer after sophomore year of college. Your work experience shouldn’t be a laundry list of all the positions you’ve ever held. Rather, tailor your resume to have 4-6 strong, related roles to the position you are applying. Stick to the one page rule: quality over quantity people.

  1. Rock the Bullets

Chances are high that the hiring manager reading your resume can discern from your social media internship position that you know how to use Instagram and Twitter. Instead of simply using bullet points to describe mundane duties of your job, use it as bait for potential interview questions. Highlight what you specifically brought to the role and leave them wanting more! Did you help the company Facebook page grow by 100 followers? Did your advertisment bring in new clients? Get specific.

  1. Taste the Rainbow

The resume rules have been thrown out the window as far as 2016 is concerned. Black and white is boring, so get creative! Keep your resume clean and concise, but you don’t have to stick to the basics. Instead of bolding your work experience, make it a bright color. Change the font of your name to something eye-catching. Add a geometric border! No one wants a Lisa Frank resume coming into their inbox, but try and stand out!

  1. Two Truths and a Lie

You are allowed to rave about yourself on a resume. It is one of the few times in life that people actually want you to brag about your accomplishments, so relish in self love, but don’t lie. This should be obvious, but for anyone who needs a cringe-worthy reminder it never ends well, please watch the episode from The Hills with Stephanie not quite living up to her “proficient in French” bullet point. Spoiler Alert: She gets fired.

  1. Most Likely to Get the Job

I don’t care about high school. You don’t care about high school. We all don’t care about high school. Unless you were valedictorian, leave it in the past and off your resume.

  1. That’s What Makes You Beautiful

You know the “interests” or “hobbies” section on resume templates? Don’t write them off! The best way to form relationships is through common connection, so tell the hiring manager you love knitting or making homemade pasta. Who knows, maybe they share the same passion!
