‘Glass: An addition to the Aboriginal toolkit’ is the fifth and latest exhibition from Alice Spring’s own Sam Juparulla Wickman.
This is not the first time Sam Juparulla Wickman has used the medium of glass. He has been mastering warm, slumped and fused glass in his work for over 15 years, and his latest work is a display of mastery in the form.
Sam Juparulla Wickman’s combines glass experimentation with his own personal experience of Aboriginal ceremony and lore, and transforms it into powerful shields.
Creating protective shields is no accident. It is purposefully reminiscent of glass that was once washed ashore from Dutch ships. The bottles, discarded by sailors, became remnants of a civilization that would eventually crash upon the shore and shatter what it found.
The shards of glass found by the indigenous people were then transformed into their own weaponry. It is an acknowledgement and celebration of a proud, inventive, and creative culture that existed, not before, but parallel with others.
‘Glass: An addition to the Aboriginal toolkit’ has been open to the public since August 17th to great support and celebration. Sam Juparulla Wickman’s work is selling quickly, so if you want to get your hands on these unique and captivating piece’s now is the time.
Each of these stirring pieces can be found at Art Mob who are known for their incredible curation of both contemporary and traditional Aboriginal Art.
