On January 9th, Meghan and Harry, previously known as the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, announced via Instagram that they will be stepping down as senior members of the Royal Family.
The news sparked conversations around the world, but the situation has been largely inflamed. #Megxit, has been adopted online worldwide to discuss the situation, however previously was used to spread hateful messages about Meghan. It seems as though people have always wanted her to leave the Royal Family, but now that she is doing it alongside her husband and their child, Archie, they remain just as unhappy.
Yesterday, Prince Harry explained the situation more, saying he was happy that he was “born into this life…but the media is a powerful force”. While he expressed gratitude for everything in his past, and his continued support of the Royal Family going forward, the words “trust me when I say there was no other option” signals that this is something that they both want.
The Royal Family are expected to share their lives with the world, unlike a regular celebrity who has a degree of privacy if they choose. This undoubtedly takes a toll. When Harry made the controversial decision to marry Meghan, people expected them to modernise the Royal Family. What better way to do so than to remove themselves from a system that champions class inequality and a family that pushes aside all Prince Andrew has done.
The uproar towards them stepping down or even something as small as Meghan touching her baby bump too much results in getting hate; so I don’t blame them for wanting a more private life for their family. The decision wouldn’t of been one that was easily made, so I think it’s time that we all calm down and respect them, their choices and their privacy.
