High-end Fashion Takes a Step Back

Jean-Paul Gaultier, renowned designer and creative artist has stepped down from designing his iconic fashion after 50 years.

Fashion royalty Gaultier, has been prominent in the industry since first debuting his collection in 1976, before founding his fashion house in 1982. He has also served as the creative director for Hermes womenswear between 2003-2010. Dabbling in couture, beauty, fragrances and accessories through his career, he assures his devoted fans that his step back from designing does not mark the end of the luxurious brand.

The designer shared the news on Twitter, stating, “This will be my last haute couture show. My last Gaultier Paris show.” His final runway show took place at Paris Fashion Week 2020 and was also a celebration of his milestone 50 years of designing.

The 67-year-old is idolised for the risks he has taken in fashion, his willingness to blur the lines and fight the restrictions of stereotypical male and female clothing. One of his most iconic designs to date was the cone shaped, bra corset that Madonna wore throughout her ‘Blonde Ambition’ tour.

He stepped back from designing ready to wear, fast fashion in 2015 to focus his talents on designing signature one off pieces for fashion weeks in Paris. His lines now include one of a kind pieces made for the world’s rich and famous.

Nevertheless, this is not the last we’ll see of Gaultier and his incredible talents, with him promising that he has a new concept and creative projects on the rise.  “I’ll tell you about it later… all the little secrets.”
