FRAU Jewellery: The Fashion, The Business, The Styling

CrowdInk had the opportunity to sit down (virtually) with Kate Bollard, stylist and fashion designer behind FRAU jewellery. She talks about where fashion meets business, how to make it as a stylist, the importance of networking (always), the frustrations of a colour-wearing Sydney transport living in the Melbourne black fashion world, and what makes FRAU jewellery different.

CrowdInk: Tell us about your brand. How did you get started? What’s your inspiration?

Kate Bollard: I started in the crazy fashion industry as a Fashion Designer, found myself leaving Sydney and began an adventure in Melbourne. Melbourne is where I started my styling career. I was surrounded by black fashion. Melbourne style is head to toe Black! I’m so Sydney, I wear a lot of colour! And I’m not afraid to wear it and really mix it up! I was lucky enough to meet amazing people who saw my talent and I networked my butt off as I didn’t know anyone in Melbourne when I moved. I have now been here for just over 6 years, I’ve worked on many a fashion week, runways, red carpets, celebrity styling and commercial campaigns.

After years of Styling, I needed a side project as I missed designing. Created from the passions of a stylist with a conscientious mind, FRAU Jewellery is a collection with a difference. Inspired by my love of travel and design, I wanted to create a collection of wearable and affordable pieces for women of all ages. Taking influence from my adventures in Europe, Asia, and the USA, I launched FRAU Jewellery in Australia in the Summer of 2014.

CI: What is your number one styling tip?

KB: Less is more, you don’t have to wear a trend head to toe! We aren’t all runway models, keep it simple. Take elements of a trend that work for you and your body shape. But most importantly, be comfortable in what you wear, because if you feel great you will rock the outfit better. Oh and it’s all about the right underwear and bra!

CI: What’s your number one tip for aspiring stylists?

KB: It’s hard work! It’s not all fabulous and fun 24hrs a day! It’s not the glamourous life everyone thinks it will be. It’s long hours; it’s mentally and physically draining, but if you love it. The great days outweigh the bad days. And you will have fun, and yes you will go to fabulous things but always remember you are a brand and you are there to network. Networking is the most important part of being a stylist!

CI: How do you spend your spare time?

KB: I love exploring! Heading to a suburb and strolling around, taking photos and finding a new place to brunch at. I also have a coffee addiction, so you will usually find me having coffee in cute little cafes in alleyways of Melbourne.

CI: What’s your favourite fashion accessory?

KB: I don’t just have one favourite, that would be like a mother choosing her favourite child! My favourite accessories are designer bags, boots and jackets. I love Melbourne winter, because you can totally style it up with accessories!
