Form of Therapy That’s Been Behind Us The Whole Time

ASMR

Relaxing role-plays, tranquil tutorials, whimsical whispering and mollifying massages = equate to a fairly stock-standard ASMR YouTube channel.

Before we recline back any further, let’s begin by defining ASMR.

Wikipedia defines ASMR (Autonomous Sensory Meridian Response) as a light tingling, euphoric relaxation, typically experienced in the upper-back portion of the body (at the back of the head/upper spine), triggered by a combination of audio and visual stimulation.

ASMR content creators would generally agree that most people have experienced ASMR without: a). Being aware of the fact that it is a definable, tangible sensation and b). Attempting to induce a state of relaxation. ASMR has the potential to be experienced in daily life, by viewing an external individual perform repetitive, mildly relaxing movements, such as stroking a pet or turning the pages of a book. ASMR videos pre-package these triggers and are generally created with the intention of aiding sleep, decreasing anxiety and reducing stress.

The biggest heavyweight currently circling in the ASMR ring is Maria of Gentle Whispering, who’s gathered a relaxed following, just shy of 1 million YouTube subscribers. Russian born and bred, Maria’s vocal intonation and mild manner are often hailed as the perfect portal to ASMR. Other soothing contenders include ASMR Darling, Heather Feather and ASMR Requests, whose popular channels deliver diverse content, often with high production value.

Whilst a lot of medical professionals find the ASMR experience difficult to rationalise, it has become a staple form of relaxation therapy for many battling on-going mental stress and strain. Whilst it cannot replace professional treatment, it can be a wonderfully unique way to relax (from the back!) the body and the mind.
