The Purge (2013)

Despite critics being divided on this iconic film, and the two lacklustre sequels in its wake, we recommend watching the original movie with the concept that started it all and made everyone ponder what they would do if all crime was legal for only one night.

The Babadook (2014)

Making headlines for being wrongly categorised as an LGBT film earlier this year, the unsettling Aussie thriller and its horrifying incarnation of the top-hat wearing titular monster, is enough to induce nightmares for a week after and make us seriously re-evaluate the books we are reading to children.

Hush (2016)

This film masterfully maintains a sense of suspense and you can’t help but journey along with Maddie, a deaf and mute writer living alone in the woods, as she fights for her life. You’ll find yourself yelling at the screen as you envision ways you would fend off a psychopathic killer without key senses, a phone or even Wi-Fi.

Lights Out (2016)

This film follows a woman delving in to her dark past to protect her family from a supernatural creature lurking in the shadows. Although it may appear clichéd from the outset, it delivers surprising depth and well-executed scares that will amplify your own fears of the dark, and make you want to sleep with your lamp on and one eye open.

Gerald’s Game (2017)
Although the film initially gives off some serious Fifty Shades vibes, it goes from erotic to psychotic faster than you could unlock a pair of handcuffs. Staying true to the Stephen King novel, we witness Jessie’s attempt to spice up her marriage transform into an agonizing, gruesome and completely unforgettable battle towards survival and self-discovery.
