Ten One Ate is a secret gem in the North Western suburbs that locals love. It is a 25 minute drive from the CBD, but well worth the travel.

Ten One Ate gained the quirky name as it is situated on 1018 Mt Alexander Road, Essendon, which was formerly the Bricklayers Arms space. From the outside, it doesn’t look like much with dark grey concrete walls. But don’t let its gloomy exterior fool you; this place is a gold mine.

It is a welcoming café, with a friendly, laid back atmosphere and also has an outdoor terrace if you want to soak up some rays.

It is the ideal place to bring your friends on a lazy Sunday morning for some brunch.

And with an all-day menu you can have breakfast for lunch, or even lunch for breakfast.

All of the food is organic with locally sourced sustainable produce and plenty of vegan, dairy-free and gluten-free choices to suit to fussiest of your friends.

It’s not the largest menu, but every item expertly crafted and is more like an art piece than a meal, with vibrant colours and decorative features. But this doesn’t mean they compromise on taste. Each meal is simple, but with fresh delicious ingredients that taste great.

Highlights include the Dr Martin Matcha Crumpets, the Double Wayu Beef Cheese Burger and chips and their gorgeous French toast (pictured below).

Also, be sure not to miss out on their iconic crazy shakes. They literally are bursting at the seams with flavour, and there’s a huge range of choices including fairy bread, cookie dough, salted caramel and Oreo to name a few.

It is easy to see why it is a local favourite, and definitely a café not to be missed with organic, delicious food.
