People are criticizing Emma Watson’s latest Vanity Fair photo shoot, in which one photograph, taken by fashion photographer Tim Walker shows her posing in a white crocheted jacket with nothing underneath.
Controversy and debates about feminism have exploded throughout the online realm today, as the feminist icon and beloved actress, who played Hermione from the Harry Potter movie series went topless.
What does this mean for feminists’ everywhere? Has the Queen of women’s rights
Emma Watson fallen into the pool of vanity (no pun intended), showing her true self and become an imposter? Or… has she in fact triumphed again, in upholding women’s rights, taking her feminism to the next level by depicting a liberated and strong woman, who is baring bravely, her true self?
The public is shaming the Beauty and the Beast star and accusing her of undermining her feminist views. Journalist and broadcaster, Julia Hartley-Brewer wrote on Twitter: “Emma Watson: ‘Feminism, feminism…gender wage gap…why oh why am I not taken seriously…feminism…oh, and here are my tits!’”
Others on Twitter have compared the photo, no different from The Sun’s Page 3, which has often been accused of objectifying women.
Meanwhile, the confused and stunned 26-year- old actress has lashed out at critics, explaining that her choice to pose topless does not undermine her feminist views and furthermore has nothing to do with the issue of feminism.
She goes on to say in a BBC interview that: “Feminism is not a stick with which to beat other women… it’s about freedom, it’s about liberation, it’s about equality”.
“I really don’t know what my tits have to do with it.”
While Emma may claim that baring her breasts was not an issue of feminism, the public doesn’t seems to agree, and if you ask me, getting her ‘tits out’, screams feminism, I mean how is it not the same as feminists going topless in protest? They’re all trying to depict the same message of liberation and freedom, lets not put that under scrutiny as well, shell we?
