World Oceans Day serves two purposes: to celebrate our love for 70% of the Earth and to spread awareness of what’s happening to our oceans and what we can do to help. David Attenborough has some thoughts on the Great Barrier Reef below:

And so it’s not all doom and gloom. The Reef is in flux and with more education and awareness, especially amongst the next generation, we can have a massive impact on the wellbeing of our aquatic ecosystems.

Tourism Operators & Businesses Magnetic Island (TOBMI) host a brilliant World Oceans Day event every year that’s filled with arts & crafts, storytelling, snorkeling, a Nelly Bay Beach Cleanup, and engaging educational presentations for all ages that celebrates our oceans. If you’re in the area, don’t miss the chance to get your hands covered in paint and join the human-letters spelling out W.O.D. on the beach!
