Pop star Taylor Swift is set to take the stand this week, testifying in an assault case against a former radio presenter from Colorado. It is alleged that in 2015, Swift was groped by radio presenter David Mueller while posing for a photograph backstage at one of her 2013 concerts.
It’s been a bitter back and forth between Swift and Mueller. The disc jockey initially sued Swift, saying her allegation caused him to lose his job. Swift then reacted by counter-suing Mueller, claiming that the groping was intentional. Her case against him said that the incident constituted assault and battery.
With the court case beginning this week, Mueller has stated that he only sued Swift in an attempt to clear his name, and to make up for lost earnings following the loss of his job, where he earnt US$150,000 a year. Mueller was aiming for $3 million in damages, to apparently make up for the wages he lost following the incident.
However, Swift isn’t seeking to bankrupt Mueller. Instead, she is suing Mueller for $1, and is aiming to set an example. Speaking of the symbolic amount, court documents reveal that Swift says she hopes the case will be “an example to other women who may resist publicly reliving similar outrageous and humiliating acts.” Swift’s lawyer has also stated that this case is an example to other women that “you can always say no.”
Swift is expected to testify later this week.
