Australian Harry Potter fans are in for a treat as it was announced that the next place the hit play would be performed Melbourne. Set to run exclusively at the Princess Theatre in early 2019,

“When we embarked on this journey, it was an objective to ensure we could get the production to Australia as soon as logistically possible,” producers Sonia Friedman and Colin Callender said in a statement.

“You can’t ever assume a new play is going to have a further life, but we knew that if Harry Potter and the Cursed Child did have a life beyond London and Broadway, that the next stop would be here.”

The eighth instalment in Rowling’s Harry Potter saga, the play is set 19 years after the end of the last novel Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, and follows Potter as a husband and father of three.

It also broke records at this year’s Laurence Olivier Awards, scooping up nine awards amongst its cast, as well as Best New Play and Best Director.

It premiered on London’s West End in July last year, selling out in hours, with some tickets sold on the black market for as much as $10,400. It has had a sold-out run ever since and will open on Broadway in New York in April 2018.

Performance dates are soon to be announced, but tickets to Harry Potter and the Cursed Child in Melbourne could be as tough to get your hands on as the Golden Snitch. Head to https://www.harrypottertheplay.com/au/ for updates and further details.
