Navigating the restaurant scene can be overwhelming. A quick dinner with friends can accidentally end up with you spending half your week’s pay if you’re not careful.
Luckily Gordon Ramsay has shared his essential rules to guarantee you the best value for money when eating out.
- Be wary of specials
Specials are not always the best items. “Specials are there to disappear throughout the evening,” Gordon Ramsay said, meaning chances are the best stuff is on the actual menu.
- Request the ‘bin end’ list for wines
The ‘bin end list’ comprises of bottles on their way out. This includes wines with peeled or scratched labels or wines that will be off soon. “Get the sommelier to come up with a great glass or great bottle and give him a price, and make sure it’s under $30.”
- Be careful of unrealistic claims
Have you ever been to a café that says ‘best coffee in the world’ and then another café with the same claim?
“They start coming up with these terminologies, saying ‘and the wicked, famous, best in the country profiteroles.’ Who said that? Who named that?” Gordon said. So be wary when establishments make unrealistic claims.
- Book more people than there will actually be
Next time you dine out try adding a couple extra seats to your booking. If it’s just the two of you, make it three. That way you’ll gain a bigger table without ending up “in the corner like a doorstop” as Ramsay puts it.
