One of the most anticipated events in the spring calendar would have to be the Melbourne Cup. And with Flemington becoming a sea of colour and floral patterns for the duration of the carnival, it’s easy to see why everyone flocks to the trackside to attend a day out at the races.

With events happening all around the track there’s plenty to see and do. Why not tuck into some of Melbourne’s best food from the newest addition to Flemington, The Park, or grab yourself a cocktail from the Cocktail Garden to enjoy.

Or alternatively, if you’re not much of a foodie you can attend one of the biggest events of the day, besides of course the “race that stops the nation”. It’s one of Melbourne’s most esteemed catwalks: Myer Fashions on the Field. This competition is a chance for race-goers to strut their stuff on the catwalk and show their passion for fashion to the people of Melbourne.

Although the decision of what to wear can be a tough and overwhelming one for some people, we’re here to help with some tips so you can dress to impress.

  1. Colour On Trend

The Melbourne Cup Carnival is all about colour. Don’t be afraid to wear colours that you’d normally be to shy to try. Alternatively, if you’re not ready to pull off the block bold print, spring is a time to embrace the florals and lace. In this case, pastels work quite nicely and still give off a fashionista vibe.

  1. Comfy Shoes

It’s as simple as that. The races are an all day event, and chances are you’ll be on your feet most of the time. Opt for something different like a wedge or a block heel, still super stylish and you’ll save yourself from the pain.

  1. Heads Up

One of the key pieces that can pull the whole race-day outfit together is the essential headpiece. Although the usual go-to is usually a statement fascinator, this year they aren’t the only things turning heads. Why not change it up and try a fabulous headband or crown to complete your ensemble? Not only do they have a big impact but they also give off a sophisticated vibe and are super on trend for this season.

  1. Dress To Impress

Or in this case, don’t! One of the biggest trends for this racing season has been to ditch the standard cocktail dress and try something different like separates, pantsuits and jumpsuits. Although not for everyone, these options can look extremely chic and fresh to make you stand out from the crowd. Definitely something to try if you’re willing to experiment with your style.

  1. Makeup On Point

Whether you’re doing it yourself or getting it done, there’s one thing you’ll want to achieve with your race day makeup, and that’s making it long lasting. Think waterproof mascara, primer and setting spray, there’s no way you want to get half way through the day to realise your face is not in place. And sunscreen is a must! The last thing you want is a red face at the end of the day. It may seem a little extreme but trust us, this extra prep will keep you in place and means less touching up during the day and more time spent sipping cocktails.

  1. Horsing Around

Make sure to have a good time! Enjoy the company you go with and make a fun day out of it. The Spring Racing Carnival is an annual event, so make the most of it with friends and family and then prepare yourself to saddle up again next year.
