Australian researchers have made a massive breakthrough in the treatment of peanut allergy in children.
A trial conducted at the Murdoch Children’s Research Institute has led to over two thirds (82%) of children treated with an experimental treatment, cured of their peanut allergy.
“These children had been eating peanuts freely in their diet without having to follow any particular program in [following] years.” said lead researcher Prof Mimi Tang.
The treatment combines a probiotic with peanut oral immunotherapy, known as PPOIT. It is designed to reprogram the immune system’s response to peanuts, and eventually develop a tolerance.
As it was only a small study, the treatment still needs to be confirmed by larger clinical studies.
The broader hope is that this treatment can help kids not just with peanut allergies, but other food allergies as well.
