And the winners are ….

The 92^ndannual Academy Awards are here, and they have been full of surprises from the very beginning. Continuing on from last year, the awards show once again had no official hosts for the night instead having numerous presenters and performers for each of the categories.

Outrage was sparked from the second nominations went up, with many calling the Oscars out for lack of diversity, including nominating no female directors, a clear lack of POC actors and crew, with the #oscarssowhite hashtag making the rounds.

However, in light of these exclusions, those who were recognised made it a point to appreciate those who did not receive nominations but indeed deserved to. Natalie Portman made the first statement of the night by donning a black cape with gold detailing of the female directors’ names who had been snubbed as she arrived on the red carpet.

Records were broken none the less with countless actors and actresses receiving their first ever nominations and wins.

Taika Waititi became the first ever Indigenous director to take home an Oscar, winning the award for Writing (Adapted Screenplay) for Jojo Rabbit.He dedicated his award to Indigenous kids everywhere.

One of the biggest awards of the night making never before seen history, went to Parasitewho took out both Best Picture and Directing as well as the award for International Feature Film and Writing (Original Screenplay). This is the first ever foreign-language film to win the award for Best Picture.

The other prestigious awardsfor the night included:

Best Actor in a Leading role – Joaquin Phoenix (his first ever Oscars win) for his performance inJoker.

Best Actress in a Leading role – Renée Zellweger for her performance as Judy Garland in Judy.

Best Actor in a Supporting Role – Brad Pitt for his role in Once Upon a Time…in Hollywood,this was Pitt’s first acting related Oscar.

Best Actress in a Supporting role – Laura Dern for Marriage Story.

Best Animated Feature Film – Toy Story 4.

Cinematography – 1917.

Costume Design – Little Woman.

Documentary (Feature) – American Factory.

Documentary (Short Subject) – Learning to Skateboard in a Warzone (if you’re a girl).

Film Editing – Ford v Ferrari.

Makeup and Hairstyling – Bombshell.

Music (Original Score) – Joker.

Music (Original Song) – (I’m gonna) Love me again (from Rocketman).

Production Design – Once Upon a Time…In Hollywood.

Short Film (Animated) – Hair Love.

Short Film (Live Action) – The Neighbors’ Window.

Sound Editing – Ford v Ferrari.

Sound Mixing – 1917.

Visual Effects – 1917.
