CrowdInk had the chance to sit down (virtually) with Mark Tuckey, founder of Mark Tuckey Australian timber furniture. He talks about growing authentically, the needs of Australian families, and what’s hot this season in home design.

CrowdInk: What was the inspiration behind Mark Tuckey?

Mark Tuckey: The inspiration for our designs used to be very much based on the materials at hand which were all timbers salvaged from demolition sites. These days it’s bit of that and a basic design sensibility whereby we’re inspired by a shape or form and we pare back that idea as much as we can to simplify both aesthetic and production.

CI: What makes Mark Tuckey unique compared to other furniture companies?

MT: We have our own style and aesthetic. We aim for an informal relaxed look which is equally suitable in a formal space. We are not afraid to mix timbers and love to use recycled material and sustainable new timber. Our furniture can certainly be unique 🙂 We manufacture in Australia, use solid timber, make to order and depending on the client’s needs we can customize standard pieces and even create something completely custom. Every item we hand make will certainly have its own unique character.

CI: What are this seasons best sellers? Trends? Must haves?

MT: Tables are the core of our business and our tripod, sleigh loop and the new quadrapod are this seasons best sellers. There is a trend for lighter ‘apartment living’ pieces and we recently introduced our classic and bistro range to meet this demand. We know Australians love to entertain and bring the family together and the dining table is usually a must have piece and a focal point in any home.

CI: What has been the biggest challenge in starting your own business?

MT: It all began with $200 dollars and a Ford F100 truck that I used to collect wood from demolition sites to take back to a garage where I had a jig-saw. After securing a large order for tables, I took a punt, and leased a factory space. As I put profits back into materials and equipment, the business grew organically.  As we grew I found delegating challenging. When you have been used to making all the decisions it is important you have great people around you whom you can trust. Starting a business today probably has more challenges, because there are many more players in the field and creating a successful business is as much about marketing as any other facet, the wherewithal, space, or equipment.

CI: What tip do you have for aspiring entrepreneurs?

MT: Work at something you love and are passionate about…find something marketable if possible.
