Justin Gaitlin, The World’s (New) Fastest Man

At the World Championships in London, Justin Gaitlin stole the 100m gold medal from the eight-time Olympic gold medalist, as the former beat his long-time rival on the track by a mere 0.03 seconds.

Usain Bolt is widely regarded as the greatest sprinter of all time. He gained worldwide prominence after shattering records to attain double gold medals at the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

As an eleven-time World Champion, many assumed that he would take home another win at this year’s championships. However, he lost not only to Gaitlin but also American Christian Coleman, who cinched second place.

Bolt took off to a bad start – his reaction time of 0.183 seconds is the slowest amongst his competitors.

The result drew loud boos from the audience, who chanted Bolt’s name as the race concluded.

Gaitlin has tested positive twice for performance enhancing drugs. After testing positive for testosterone use in 2006, he narrowly escaped a life ban from the sport by cooperating with the authorities, ultimately receiving a four-year suspension after appeal.

There seems to be no bad blood between the two off-track though. Post-victory, Gaitlin bowed to Bolt in recognition of his many sporting achievements, telling the BBC that “the first thing [Bolt] did was congratulate me and say that I didn’t deserve the boos. He is an inspiration.”
