Heading to Sydney on the 26th of August after a successful Melbourne run, SIX is a historical musical about the story of Henry the Eighth’s six wives, told from their perspective. I’m of the opinion that this is a masterpiece of a show, but I do have my favourites from the soundtrack. Here are the songs of SIX, from ‘sometimes I skip this’to ‘will put on repeat for hours.’
- Heart of Stone
No one tell Jane Seymour, but this one’s kind of boring. The lyrics are a bit lacklustre, and overall it’s not a very memorable tune. Still a good song! But not as good as the rest of the bops on the soundtrack.
- I Don’t Need Your Love
Starts a bit too slow for my liking, but the vocals towards the end are its saving grace. The last run, coupled with the high note, brings the song to a powerful finish. It’s the kind of energy that the rest of the tune could’ve benefited from.
- No Way
I’m not going to lie to you, sometimes I forget what this song is about. It’s one of those, enjoy in the moment, kind of tracks.
- Ex-Wives
It’s fitting that the opening track to the musical is in the sixth spot, isn’t it? The clever twist of the famous rhyme (“divorced, beheaded, died, divorced, beheaded, survived”) into the powerful hook of “divorced, beheaded, live,” complete with a powerful six-part harmony, lifts this song to the next level.
- Haus of Holbein
This one makes me laugh so much, the accents are perfect, and I’ve been informed that this is exactly what German pop sounds like.
- Six
A very strong closing number, and the perfect way to round up an already amazing performance. The count from one to six gets me every time.
- All You Wanna Do
You really could not fit any more innuendos into this song if you tried.
- Get Down
Beyoncé. Need I say more?
- Don’t Lose Ur Head
“Grew up in the French court, oui oui bonjour.” That’s all.
With jaw-dropping choreography, and wickedly catchy pop tunes, SIX is a performance I wouldn’t want to miss.
