At just 24 years old, Zendaya is the youngest winner of the Oustanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series Emmy Award. The former Disney Channel star’s first Emmy win was well-deserved for her exceptional and raw portrayal of Rue, a teenager struggling with drug addiction, in Sam Levinson’s Euphoria on HBO. This was one of the most coveted awards of the 72nd Primetime Emmy Awards with a category of outstanding nominees – Sandra Oh and Jodie Comer of Killing Eve, Jennifer Aniston of The Morning Show, Olivia Colman of The Crown and Laura Linney of Ozark.
Zendaya accepted the award with pure joy at the virtual ceremony, surrounded by her family. The reaction is definitely worth watching if you are in need of a feel-good moment. Zendaya ended her speech by saying, “I know this is a really weird time to be celebrating but I do just want to say that there is hope in the young people. I know our TV show doesn’t always seem like a great example of that, but there is hope in the young people. I just want to say to all my peers out there doing the work in the streets, I see you, I admire you, I thank you”.
Zendaya is the second black actress to win the category after Viola Davis won the award in 2015 for her role in How To Get Away With Murder.
The win has been widely celebrated with many praising Zendaya’s performance and others feeling encouraged to watch the show.
