Looking for some heavenly inspiration on your next African adventure? Why not explore “The Selinda Adventure Trail” in the northern region of Botswana?

Just close your eyes for a moment and imagine you’re in a canoe, gliding through still waters of the Okavango River with the only sound being the hum of wildlife and nature. The ultimate silence of a different kind –

Discover one of Botswana’s oldest adventure trails in the heart of the Selinda Reserve. The 320,000 acre area in northern Linyanti region offers a rare, authentic canoe and walking experience.

Once a dry river bed, the Selinda Spillway now flows each year enabling like-minded travellers to enjoy an alternative wildlife adventure. The combination of canoeing and walking gives us an insight to experiences of our old “adventurers” as we venture into the reserve’s remote woodlands.

Heading out on our 5 day journey along the Selinda Spillway we are flown by helicopter to our starting point. Flying above, we take in the stunning scenery and landscapes of the Okavango Delta, scattered wildlife below giving us an opportunity to experience these magnificent creatures from another angle.

Our group is small and intimate. With only eight people, we are full of excitement and anticipation. Depending on water levels, our canoe experience may be combined with a touch more walking, though that certainly won’t deter us.

Set with our backpack and experienced guide, we walk over 20kms and canoe around 40kms. Our days are spent sighting elephant, buffalo, hippo, and zebra and watching from the distance as unsuspecting wildlife are upwind of our smell. Avid bird lovers will be in awe of the 300 species currently found in the reserve. Every day brings us a range of experiences and varied wildlife sightings, and as we move to each camp we soon realise that no two days are the same.

At the end of each day, we enjoy the warm bucket showers washing away the days dust, the lovely staff fill our tummies full of sumptuous food in preparation for our next day of energy-filled activity. At night we are snug in our bedrolls with all the essential comforts of fly-camping and listen intently to the sounds of lion and hyena calling in the distance.

As our 5 day adventure comes to a close the Selinda Spillway Adventure Trail has given us an experience and adventure not to be forgotten, – an insight to exploring an untouched part of Africa on foot, out of the environment of touristy masses and the inspiration of getting back to nature.
