Winter is well under way and most of us are snuffling, coughing and sneezing our way through it.  Pick any one of these comforting and delicious home cures, guaranteed to lift your spirits.

Jewish “Penicillin”:

This recipe is the real deal.  Golden clear liquid, with tender vegetables and beautifully fluffy matzo balls.  There is a reason this soup has the nickname of Penicillin – the lovely drops of chicken fat you see floating on top have actually been scientifically proven to thin out mucus in our sinuses and chest.

Mulligatawny:

More of a chunky stew than a soup, this mildly spiced Indian-English fusion soup with turmeric and coconut milk features lentils and a chopped apple.

Chicken and Dumplings:

This is THE go-to comfort food in the southern US.  Every good southern granny will have her own recipe which has fed and cured the whole family time and again.  This interesting version from Texas features beautiful rolled dumplings and a little kick from some cumin and cilantro (coriander).

Greek Avgolemono:

This healthy and comforting lemony soup is made with rice and thickened with frothed eggs. It’s traditionally one of the foods eaten to break the fast of Greek Easter.  Kids love this one!

Moroccan Chicken Broth Stew:

This recipe is warming and perfumed from the spices, and is packed full of healthy ingredients such as sweet potato, dried apricots, chickpeas, and kale.

Vietnamese Pho Ga

This delicious chicken soup has depth of flavour from charring some root ginger over direct heat, rice noodles, and some great textures from typical Vietnamese accompaniments of crispy onions and pickled chilies.
