Australia has Voted YES

The postal vote that began in September caused much international speculation and divided many Australians has ended in a YES.

When the Australian Bureau of Statistics asked, “Should the law be changed to allow same-sex couples to marry?” 79.5% of eligible Australian’s voted.

The same-sex marriage postal vote results were released this morning at 10AM, with 61.6% of voters ticking ‘yes’, while only 38.4% of people that voted, ticked their ‘no’ box.

Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull has called on those politicians opposed to same-sex marriage to respect the majority decision handed down by the Australian people.

Mr Turnbull wants legislation on same sex marriage passed before Christmas, however debate around the legislation will likely begin tomorrow.

Results are available online showing the percentage of ‘yes’ votes for each state. The ACT had the highest rate of ‘yes’ responses, with 74%, and New South Wales had the least, with 57.8% of voters ticking ‘yes’.
