Chart cruncher ARIA has released its full rundown of what Australians were listening to and buying in 2017. No surprises that English sensation Ed Sheeran took out top spot for highest selling album and highest selling single of the year with Divide and ‘Shape of You’. More than that, Sheeran also nabbed a further three spots in the top ten with ‘Castle on the Hill’, ‘Galway Girl’ and ‘Perfect’.
The rest of the singles rankings feature some familiar names: ‘Despacito’ happily sits at #2 while frat boy duo The Chainsmokers come in at #5 with ‘Something Just Like This’.
Pnau’s 2016 track ‘Chameleon’ the highest ranked local entry at #32. Dean Lewis’s ‘Waves’, Starley’s ‘Call on Me’ and Amy Shark’s ‘Adore’ all made the top 50.
P!nk takes out the #2 spot on the album charts with Beautiful Trauma, with Taylor Swift’s much discussed Reputation coming in at #3. The rest of the top #10 sees no less than 3 soundtracks – Moana, Trolls and Guardians of the Galaxy. Even Michael Bublé’s Christmas sneaks in at #8.
If you’re wondering where the Aussies are, well so are we. Paul Kelly’s Life is Fine was the highest at #14. Jessica Mauboy, INXS, Bliss N Eso, Tina Arena, Tash Sultana, Gang of Youths, Crowded House and Cold Chisel all make it into the top 50.
In the entire top 100 album chart only 27 are from local artists, while the top 100 singles feature just 9 – 4 of which were released in 2016. It’s not a great turnout.
