There’s no denying that 2016 has been quite an eventful year and not in the most positive way. And although all aspects of life have been affected, some have resonated more than others. Over the course of our trip around the sun, some of the world’s most renowned artists have passed away leaving behind a trail of shock and heartbreak. But as we approach the end of the year and big names keep appearing on our news feeds — the latest being actress Carrie Fisher, one man has made it his mission to protect the star that some might call America’s sweetheart, a.k.a. Betty White.

The self-proclaimed guardian angel, a Greek man named Demetrious Hrysikos, has created a GoFundMe page to raise money to support his body guard status until January 1, once the actress is safe from 2016’s curse.

On the page he states:

“Help 2016 catch these hands if it goes anywhere near Betty White! If she’s okay with it I will fly to where ever Betty White is and keep her safe till Jan 1 , 2017. Now , assuming she doesn’t want a strange Greek standing guard outside her door all monies will be donated to the Spartanburg little theatre to help craft new stars of stage and screen to carry mantle of the legends that have left is this year.”

The page got great feedback, with fans being more than happy to jump on-board.

“2016 what you WON’T do is get your hands on B-Dub!” read one of the comments on the page, linked to a donation of US$20.

The idea behind the page wasn’t to stop death, obviously. It was just a captivating way to raise funds for the Spartanburg Little Theatre, in South Carolina.

“After the passing of Carrie Fisher, I just wanted to try to make people smile and maybe do some good,” said Hrysikos. He added, “So I started the page, not expecting all this, but glad it happened. Any money I raise to help new budding artists gets some good out of a bad situation is a win, I think.

Hrysikos has already raised over US$3,000 thanks to more than 300 donations, passing its intended goal of US$2,000. With just a couple of days left till the end of the year, we can only hope that the project will see a happy ending, with the proceeds being given to the theatre and the 94-year-old actress making it through many more years to come.
